Your Tango Teachers

Veronika Kruta & Pedro Farias

We have been dancing tango for 20 years and teaching for the past 15, in Argentina, Brazil, the US, Canada and Europe.

“Clear, precise, energetic and encouraging” is often the type of feedback we receive from our students about our approach. We are passionate about seeing our students dancing confidently and vibrantly. Our classes are progressive so that students can feel grounded in the basics in order to access more complex options. We love to encourage fluidity in various embrace styles to match the music, different partners, and dynamics.

In addition to teaching tango, Pedro also plays in the tango band La Mucha Tango as well as two cumbia bands. His teaching of tango is often infused with his expertise as a musician. Veronika draws on her background as a yoga teacher to bring functional movement anatomy and body awareness into her dance instruction.

Yoga Classes

A blend of vinyasa, yin, and Veronika's signature yoga fusion body conditioning for dancers.

In addition to deepening your practice both physically and spiritually, these classes aim to take care of your body so you can keep up with all the dancing, and increase your body awareness to aid your tango learning process.

Modifications of more advanced poses are always offered so that both newbies and experienced yogis find something suitable for their bodies.

Milonga Outings

Explore the diverse milonga scene in Buenos Aires as a group or venture off on your own with my personalized recommendations. Many milongas will have live orchestras and performances. On our final night you'll get to dance to El Cachivache live!

Our team of taxi dancers will accompany us for some of these outings so you're guaranteed to dance to your heart's content! During these outings I'll offer plenty of tips for getting cabaceos and how to navigate milonga etiquette and customs that are specific to Buenos Aires.

Charla & Asado

Q&A with the band and teachers, plus a Traditional Argentine Barbecue

Ever wanted to pick the brain of the musicians and teachers, beyond the class setting? This is your chance! Ask anything you're curious about during a one hour Q&A session, followed by a traditional Argentine BBQ, served up by the resident "asador" of our retreat guest house. Vegetarian and vegan options will be available upon request.

The whole evening takes place on the charming rooftop of the house, after which we will head down to the studio for a final evening of dancing with our taxi dancers to a live concert by El Cachivache.

Venue

The retreat venue is a boutique tango guest house, called La Maleva, owned by a tango dancer and managed by a friendly and helpful staff.

It is a gorgeously remodeled historical home, conveniently located in the Almagro neighborhood, close to many milongas and cute cafes.

The house includes comfortable and modern bedrooms, a shared and well equipped kitchen, spacious living room, rooftop terrace and a dance studio which guests can use to book additional private lessons or practice sessions and attend additional events and classes hosted there. All bedrooms have a safety deposit box and air conditioning.

La Maleva can provide taxi service from the Buenos Aires EZEIZA airport, and breakfast upon request.

We will have the entire house reserved for our group. Each room is unique and will be available on a first-come-first-served basis.

This retreat was over the top fantastic and wonderful!  I was 100% happy with my decision to do this after the second day, and only got happier each day following. You have set a high bar. I can't imagine going to Buenos Aires without Veronika!

"You are a talented spirit on earth and a true class act. You put an enormous amount of thought and effort into making this an exceptional experience and it shows. Thank you for a magical journey into BsAs and the deep poetry of tango."

"Veronika created a fabulous retreat! There was enough structure for good learning and practice along with a lot of flexibility. Veronika was with us every step of the way for classes, milongas, shopping and eating, though we also had as much freedom as we wanted. Her retreats are a perfect way to become familiar with tango in Buenos Aries. Highly recommend!"

"I tried to contain my expectations regarding my second retreat with Veronika because the first retreat was so perfect and over the top amazing. This second retreat was also over the top amazing even though nothing was a repeat. The trip was once again unique and specialized. I got to feel like a local instead of a tourist including cheering Argentina on for the World Cup!"

"The retreat is in no small part a success because of YOU. It is one thing to be able to organize a trip for a small group of folks with recommendations and instructors and assistants. That's a huge feat. What makes it REALLY special though is you- your bubbly personality, your laugh, your advice giving, your generosity, your whole investment of self. I really felt comfortable asking you about anything and loved every minute you gave us of your time. Very well done, my friend!!"

"The retreat was well organized, as all the details were thought out and there was a great balance of the events. I liked the progression of classes we had every day (yoga-technique-workshop). It was super helpful to have professional dancers as our partners, and their feedback was valuable. All the teachers were amazing and engaged, which facilitated the learning process. I also appreciate that it was a small group of us, as the retreat had a cozy atmosphere. Above all, I felt that you care about each participant (students, teachers, dancers) and that you put your heart into creating this unforgettable experience. It was such a joy to join you on this journey of immersing into the world of tango and Argentine culture!:-)"

Freguently asked Questions

  • Do I have to have prior yoga experience to participate?
No. The yoga classes will be suitable for a variety of bodies with options for newbies and experienced practitioners alike.

  • Do I have to have prior tango experience to participate?
Yes. This retreat is geared towards dancers who have taken tango classes before and have experience attending practicas and/or milongas. If you are newer to tango and want to join this retreat I highly recommend you take more classes prior to the trip and attend as many milongas or practicas as possible. You can also come early and take some private lessons!

  • Can I skip the yoga and come just for the tango?
Yes. All activities on this trip are optional. However, there are many other tango retreats that don't include yoga and one of the unique aspects of this one is to bring yoga & tango lovers together in an environment where we can explore both these practices.

  • Will there be time to book private lessons?
Yes. There will be ample time throughout the retreat to schedule private lessons or other activities that are not on the itinerary.

  • How much do things cost in Argentina?
The exchange rate fluctuates but always in the favor of the US Dollar, so things will certainly be cheaper in Buenos Aires than they are in the US or Europe. I will keep everyone updated on the latest rates before the trip, but to give you an idea, dinner at an average restaurant will cost around $20USD, milonga entrance around $4, taxi to a milonga around $2-5, coffee around $2.

  • Can I come earlier or stay longer?
Yes! If you have the option to do this I highly recommend it. In the past participants have found it nice to arrive at least a day earlier to settle in, rest, and get familiar with their surroundings or purchase tango shoes or anything else needed at the start of the trip. Staying longer after the retreat is also a great option because the retreat will give you a great introduction to how things work in Buenos Aires and the tango scene here so that you will feel comfortable continuing on your own after.

  • Am I too young/old to join?
No. All ages are welcome to join. In the past, we've had a wide range of ages and backgrounds. I take great care in creating an ambiance in which everyone feels welcome. Milongas in Buenos Aires have a lot of diversity in age. There are milongas that are friendly to all ages and others that tend to veer in one direction or the other. If you are looking for a particular type of experience, the benefit of joining this trip is that you will have my guidance in which milonga to choose based on your needs, or you can join the milonga outings with the rest of the group.

  • Will I get asked to dance at the milongas in Buenos Aires?
There are a lot of factors that determine this such as how well you cabaceo, the type of milonga you go to, how friendly you appear, whom you are looking at, etc. In our initial welcome meeting, I will give you a detailed insight into how to ensure that you're not sitting out during your time on this trip. For several of our milonga outings, we will also have our team of taxi dancers join us specifically to dance with you!

  • Do I have to sign up with a partner?
No. You do not need to sign up with a partner because we will have you partner our team of professional dancers from Buenos Aires.

  • Is Wifi available at the retreat venue?
Yes. Wifi is free and reliable at La Maleva. Most restaurants and milongas around the city also have free and mostly reliable Wifi.
